IRS Electronic Payment Requirements
President Trump signed an executive order requiring all payments to and from the IRS be made electronically as of September 30, 2025. There are limited exceptions to this requirement that we do not believe apply to our clients.
This means that all federal quarterly estimated payments and payments due with your tax return or extension should be made electronically. Muto, Vollucci & Co., Ltd. (MVCo) can continue to set up electronic funds withdrawal from your preferred bank account for your tax return and extension payments. Your 2025 tax organizer will show what bank account we have on file, and you can either change or confirm that account.
***IMPORTANT***
We will NEVER withdraw funds from your bank account without your consent. When making a payment with your extension, we ask that you sign Form 8878, IRS e-file Signature Authorization for Form 4868.
When making a payment with your tax return, we ask that you sign Form 8879, IRS e-file Signature Authorization. This form is dual purpose – it authorizes us to e-file your tax return and also withdraw funds as indicated in the transmittal letter provided with your tax return package.
Without these forms signed by you and your spouse, if applicable, we cannot file your extension and/or tax return and cannot have the tax payment electronically withdrawn from your account.
Making Payments Online
To make your estimated quarterly federal tax payments, or in the event you do not want MVCo to administer your extension or tax return payment, you must pay online. Currently, there are a couple methods you can use, Direct Pay or Individual Online Account.
Direct Pay is used to make one-time payments without having an IRS account. You can schedule payments up to 365 days in advance. https://www.irs.gov/payments/direct-pay-with-bank-account
Individual Online Account requires creating an account. Payments can be scheduled in advance and there is an option to set up recurring payments. You can also more easily track your payment history and access other information through an online account. https://www.irs.gov/payments/online-account-for-individuals
Direct Deposit
Most clients already utilize direct deposit for refunds, but if you do not already do so, please provide us with bank account information with your upcoming 2025 tax organizer. Otherwise, the IRS will not send a check, but will send a debit card with your refund amount.
